The Crate Trick : The Secret to a Calmer Dog

Writer's picture: Tyler EdgeTyler Edge

Do you have a dog who tends to be a little too excited sometimes? I have a trick for you! When it comes to dogs there are many things that can be done to help them be a bit calmer in all situations. Today we are going to focus on one of the most overlooked things we can do to help our dog be calmer. Are you ready? That trick is......! Don't let them barge out of the crate when you open it!

Did you just get home from work? Here's the situation, you just got home from work, you want nothing more than to let that fur missile out of their crate and be showered in soft hairy dog love. We totally get it! The problem is, if we allow that, then we are actually conditoning our pups to think it's a good thing to be uncontrollably excited!

We want to hug and to squeeze our pups, but our desire to give them fair and well balanced training should be an even higher priority for us! First impressions matter, and if I am telling my dog daily that the first time they see me they can jump all over me like a pogo stick with a tail, then I am teaching them the wrong thing!

How To

The application is simple. When you open the crate start by doing it slowly, don't let them barge out. We start by opening the crate an inch or two, if your pup tries to squeeze out, gently close the crate again. Rinse and repeat this until the crate is fully opened. Any time your dog tries to open the door then quickly close the crate once again. When your dog has finally settled, give them a release word (We are partial to "yes") to let them know they can come out. Once they do, then give them all the love they could ever want! This is a win-win situation, you and your pup still get the love, but you've done it in a way that actually conditioned them to be a bit calmer and more well behaved! Now enjoy your "slightly" calmer snuggles, and be consistent, because consistency is key!

Do you already do this with your pup?

  • Yes

  • Nope

  • No, but I will now!
